Cemetery for Muslim migrants to open in Sicily

A cemetery for Muslims will open in Palma di Montechiaro in the Sicilian province of Agrigento. The cemetery will chiefly serve as the burial site of Muslim migrants who die while attempting to reach Italy by sea.

The agreement to create the first Muslim cemetery in Palma di Montechiaro was signed earlier by Prefect Filippo Romano and Mayor Stefano Castellino.

Next week, three imams are expected to visit Palma di Montechiaro to determine how to build the gate and decorate the area.

The cemetery is expected to open between September and October and will span across an area of over 1,000 square meters.

It will allow for the burial of up to 370 bodies in Palma di Montechiaro and, If needed, can be expanded.

Until now, migrants who perished at sea were buried in nearby Messina.
